Gladys F. Evans
Cumberland, MD- Gladys F. Evans passed peacefully on November 13, 2011, following a short illness at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, MD. She was 91 and had been a resident at the Dawnview Center, Fort Ashby, WV for the past three years. Prior to Dawnview, Mrs. Evans lived in Bremen, GA and Bomont (Clay County), WV.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry C. and Mary Rosabelle (Hall) Dillon; her husband, Luther F. Evans; an infant daughter, Christine Evans; and, a son, Robert L. Evans.
She is survived by her children, Wilma J. Evans of Martinsburg, WV, Wanda K. Wolfe of SC, Marshall L. Evans of St, Albans, WV, and Charles R. Evans of GA; two grandchildren, five great, grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at King-Mullins Cemetery, Bomont, WV.
Heather Dawn Niday
Gauley Bridge- Heather Dawn Niday, 30, of Gauley Bridge, WV, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2011.
Born on December 22, 1980, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Sandra Cole Niday of Gauley Bridge and Herb Niday of Ansted.
She was a restaurant manager for Ginos and a member of St. Marks Catholic Church in Fallston, MD.
In addition to her parents, she is also survived by her fiance’, William Childers of Gauley Bridge; sister, Holli (Shelby) McGhee of Ansted; niece, Hannah Stover of Ansted; paternal grandmother, Edith Niday of Ansted, and many aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were 11 am Friday, December 2, 2011, at Pennington Funeral Home with Rev. Junior Cooper officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Thomas Glenn Graham
Buckeye, Arizona- Thomas Glenn Graham, 59, of Buckeye died Nov. 21, 2011, at his home. Mr. Graham was born Nov. 26, 1951, in Lizemores, W.V. He moved to Arizona in 1967, and worked as a commercial truck driver for Fry’s Food and Drug. He was a master sergeant in the Army and served for 20 years. He was a member of the Modlite Racing Association and Lifetime Member of VFW Post No. 4419 in Clay, W.V.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; one daughter, Dorothy Hoffman of Grand Bay, Ala.; one son, Lee; his mother, Louise of Jodie, W.V.; five sisters, Katherine Wagner of Jodie, W.V., Bobbi Boggs of Lizemores, W.V., Edith Thompson of Tonopah, AZ, Alice Villa of Procious, W.V., and Melinda Peck of Belva, W.V.; and two grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his father, the Reverend Hubert L. Graham
Services were at 11 a.m. November 30 at First Southern Baptist Church, 405 N. Third St. in Buckeye, AZ. The Rev. Artie Woodcox officiated.

Mona Lisa Milam
Belva, WV- Mona Lisa Milam, 47, of Belva, entered into rest December 1, 2011 at Montgomery General Hospital.
Born on March 23, 1964, in Charlton Heights, she was the daughter of Billy Jack and Louella Foster.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she is also survived by her daughters, Amanda Burchett of Indore and Ashley Chennault of Gauley Bridge; sisters, Cathy Thurm of Montgomery and Jane Lucas of Lizemores; brothers, Andy Foster of Bickmore, John Hersh of Belva and Richard Hersh of Falls View; step-daughters, Heather Milam of Michigan and Amanda Bowers of Monroe, NC; step-son, Johnny Milam of West Virginia; grandchildren, Logan, Morgan and Emmah; step-grandchildren, Xander, Keira, Aidan, Madison, Brice, and Adriana; many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service was 1 pm Monday, December 5, 2011, at Holcomb Cemetery, Indore, with her father, Billy Jack Foster officiating.
There was no visitation.

Arland Sears Ivydale -Arland Sears, 64, of Ivydale, entered into rest Tuesday, October 11, 2011 after long battle with cancer, He passed in Florida while seeking medical treatment. Born October 30, 1946 in Floe WV., he was the son of the late William O. and Georgica Sears. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Garland Sears and Ricky Cadle.Arland is survived by his daughter Connie, son Arland both of Las Vegas Nevada, 6 grandchildren, brothers, William "Billy" O. Sears, of Pennsylvania, Rocky Cadle of Craigsville, Sisters Hazel Bays of Port St. Lucie Florida, Loretia Price of Salisaw, Oklahoma .There will be no services at this time.
Eva Jean Willis
Yawkey - Eva Jean Willis 85, of Yawkey, W.V., formerly of Clay, passed away October 15, 2011 at her home. She was born February 22, 1926 at Newton, W.V.. She was the daughter of the late James and Sarah White. She served as a past worthy matron of the Rebekah Lodge in Clay, W.V. and was a member of the Newton Baptist Church. She was a retired Magistrate with twenty years service.
Surviving are her husband of forty years; Paige Willis, a daughter and her husband; Anna and Nello Bird of Yawkey, W.V., a son; Larry and Linda Williams of Elizabeth, W.V., two grandchildren; Jason and Matthew Williams of Elizabeth, W.V., and three great grandchildren; Levi, Alex and Jaciee Williams of Elizabeth, W.V..
She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters; Earnest, Ray and Shirley White, Nettie Taylor and Icie Lambertson.

James W. Kearns
Bomont -James W. Kearns of Bomont went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 7, 2011.
He was retired from Lucent Technologies and was active at Reamer Gospel Tabernacle as a trustee, Sunday school teacher and youth leader. He was also involved with the community in the Masonic Lodge; Past Chaplain of the Lions Club; the Odd Fellows; the Queen Shoals PSD; Clay youth athletics; and basketball coach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenna (Samples) and George Willard Kearns.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly (Sample) Kearns; son, Michael Kearns (Erica) of Clendenin; daughters, Lesa Hess (Jamie) of Powhatan, Va., and Patricia Taylor (Toby) of Bickmore; grandchildren, Michael and Jamie Kearns, James Hess and Sarah, Seth and Rachel Kirk; and great-grandchildren, McKinley and Kase.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 9, at Reamer Gospel Tabernacle with Pastor Clarence Deel officiating. Interment will be at Boone-Samples Cemetery, Bomont with Masonic graveside rites by Lodge #126 AF&AM.

Opal Cook Burns
Kenna -Opal Cook Burns, 79, of Kenna passed away on October 10, 2011, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston following a brief battle with cancer.
She was born on July 4, 1932 at Ovapa, Clay County, and was a daughter of the late Burl B. and Icie Harriet Griffith Cook.
Opal was retired from Carbon Fuel Company in Charleston. She was a very active member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Ripley.
She is survived by her brother, Lowell Cook of Elkview, sisters Oleta Aeiker of St. Albans, Alberta Ashley of Clendenin, Ohio, Ann Monroe of Lady Lake, Fla., and Ondra Wilson of Mineral Wells; and many nieces and nephews.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Ray K. Burns. In addition to her parents, Opal was preceded in death by four brothers, Leo, Lawrence, Lewis and Larry.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 15, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 229 N. Church St., Ripley, with the Rev. Teresa Deane officiating. Entombment followed in Cunningham Memorial Park and Chapel Mausoleum, St. Albans.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Waybright Funeral Home, 511 S. Church St., Ripley.

Ruth Ann (Nichols) Carr
Gassaway -Ruth Ann (Nichols) Carr of Gassaway, WVA went to be with the Lord on September 15, 2011.
She was born August 16, 1949 in Lizemore, WVA to the late John and Soprona (Holcomb) Nichols of Ovapa, WVA.
Ruth was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, crafts, but most of all family and friends. She was a member of the Engel Chapel Church of Gassaway.
She married Arnold Carr of Gassaway; now deceased. Surviving are her children Tracy Prez of Connecticut, Cindy ( Carr ) Collins of Beckley, Evan (Cathy) Carr of Gassaway, five grand children, two great grand children, sisters Carrie (George) Tschann of Oregon, Ohio and Juanita (Tom) Mathias of Fremont, Ohio
In addition to her parents and Husband; Ruth was preceded in death by her son Allen Nichols of Ovapa and her brother Bob Nichols of Vermillion, Ohio
Services were held September 18, 2011 at the Roach Funeral Home in Gassaway, WVA. She was placed to rest at Jerushia Church Cemetery on Sugar Creek.
Vernon Calvin Bird
Lizemores -Vernon Calvin Bird, 62, of Lizemores, entered into rest October 8, 2011. Born October 22, 1948 in Lizemores. He was the son of the late Vernon and Nancy Jane Bird. He was timber cutter for C.Bolt Lumber Co.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Mary (Holcomb) Bird of Lizemores, sons, Larry Bird of Montgomery, Scott Bird of Bentree, 4 grandchildren, brothers, Danny Bird of Lizemores and Junior Bird of Brownsville.
Funeral service was held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Naamon Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Holcomb & Nichols Cemetery, Holcomb Ridge.

Shirley Austin Boles
Jodie- Shirley Austin Boles, 84, of Jodie, passed away peacefully from our lives on October 12, 2011.
Born in Jodie on March 14, 1927, he was the son of the late Shirley Ruffner Boles and Helena Mae Hess Boles. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Louise Morris and brother, Jimmy Boles.
He retired from Union Carbide Corporation where he was an electrician in the coal mines for 25 years. He also served in the U. S. Navy during World War II on the USS California. He was a member of the Jodie Baptist Church and enjoyed bluegrass music.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Mona Gaynell Harvey Boles, son, Kenneth, Austin Boles and wife, Debbie; daughter, Susan Tawney and husband, James; randson, Kenneth, Austin (K.B.) Boles, II and wife, Miranda; three great-grandsons, Max, Luke and Will Boles; sisters, Carol Preast and Nina Keenan and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was 11 am Saturday, October 15, 2011, at Jodie Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Shaffer. Burial followed in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Chatta was a retired cook and a in home care giver from Kimberly Quality Care, Charleston. She loved to cook and was a avid sewer.
She is survived by her sons, Jerry "Squeak" (Connie) Gill of Spencer, OH., Randy Gill, Billy Gill and Toby "Beaver" Gill all of Rock Camp, Jimmy (Mary) Hamrick of Deep Water, daughters, Tina (John) Duffield of Greenwich, OH., Cindy (Chris) Potasnik of Birch River, 23 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, brothers, Dale (Janet) Hamrick of Elkview, Jesse (Esther) Hamrick of Birch River, and sister, Alice (Dean) Morrow of Tiffin, OH.

James Woodrow Boggs
Ivydale- James Woodrow Boggs, 98, of Ivydale, passed away September 30, 2011 at his home.
He was born in Clay County and was a son of the late James Ernest Boggs and Blanch Lough Boggs. He was a US Navy Veteran and was a former coal miner.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Myers of Culpepper VA, three grandchildren, Beverly White of Washington, Tammy Hanson of Georgia, Melissa Kern of Virginia. Ten great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren and great nephew Jeff Boggs (Micki).
He was preceded in death by his wife Alvira Morris Boggs and a son, James Camdon Boggs.
Graveside services were held Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Boggs Cemetery at Big Otter. Rev. Kenneth Tanner officiated. Military graveside rites were held by the VFW Post of Clay. Stump Funeral Home of Arnoldsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
Larry K. Cook
Kenna-
Larry K. Cook, 69, of Kenna passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at Marietta Memorial Hospital following a seven-month battle with cancer. A memorial service was held Saturday October 1, at Hickory Grove Church, Kenna, with Pastors Dale Grady and Fairley McCor mick officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Larry K. Cook Youth Memorial Fund, H.C. 62 Box 74, Kenna, WV 25248. This fund has been established for area youth who might not otherwise be able to attend 4-H Camp or participate in activities associated with the Jackson County Junior Fair.
Dr. James E. "Doc" Boggs
Ivydale- Dr. James E. "Doc" Boggs, 84, of Ivydale, entered into rest on September 20, 2011. He was born on Feb. 6, 1927 and was the son of Guy and Ruby Boggs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Bambi Boggs, and his sister, Dorcas Linkinogger.
James is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Boggs of Ivydale; daughters, Debbie Messer (Joe) of Sissonville, Rebecca Hill (Ken) of Union, KY, and Dr. Kimberly Pugh (Glenn Cobb) of Charleston, SC; brother, Dr. G. Vernon Boggs of Luray, VA; grandchildren, James Smith, Matthew Smith, Lindsay Flanagan, Jacob Pugh, Ashley Greene, John Hill, William Messer, 1st Lt. Joshua Pugh, 2nd. Lt. Zach Pugh, Megan Hill, Luke Bailey; great-grandchildren, Zach Null, Cade Flanagan, Audrey Flanagan, Reed Smith, Claire Flanagan, and Ella Flanagan.
James was an Army veteran. He was a graduate of West Virginia University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He interned at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Huntington, and did his surgery residency at CAMC Memorial Division. After practicing surgery in Charleston for over twenty years, he returned to his beloved roots in Clay County, WV. where he started a family practice in his boyhood home. He retired in 2006, having touched the lives of many.
He was an avid gardener, hunter, fisherman, farmer, and entrepreneur. He was a loving husband, dad, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by his family. He will be remembered for his infinite generosity, his gift for healing, and most of all for the love and care he provided for his family. We are comforted in knowing we will be reunited in heaven.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 24 at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith funeral home with pastors Wilma Dobbins and Gary Kendall officiating. The burial followed in the Douglas Cemetery, Ivydale, WV.

Born March 3, 1928 in Clay, he was the son of the late George Washington and Missouri Belle (Rogers) Mullins. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by brothers, Ray, Russell, Herbert, Marion and sister, Mary Mullins.
Wilkie was a retired Machine Operator for Georgia Pacific at Swandale, WV.
He is survived by his wife Hattie (Robison) Mullins of Dog Run, sons and daughter-in-laws, Dale and Kim Mullins, James "BO" and Darlene Mullins, Jimmy and Amanda Mullins Ernie and Cindy Mullins all of Dog Run, daughters and son-in-laws, Linda and Steve Boggess of Gassaway, Nancy and Brian Adkins of Dog Run, 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, adopted daughters, Donna and Joe Bragg of Newark, OH., Denise Holcomb of Clay, nieces Donna Gilchirst and Shirley Waber both of Michigan.

Naamon Robert Bird Dixie– Naamon Robert Bird, 74 of Dixie, entered into rest on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Montgomery General Hospital. He is the son of the late Vernon and Nancy Jane Bird. Mr. Bird was a retired Coal Miner for Peabody Coal Co, and he was a member of the Laurel Fork Missionary Baptist Church.
Naamon is survived by his wife, Tammy Ann Bird of Dixie; his sons Roger, of Oak Hill, Gary, of Alta, Jeremy, of Dixie, and Naamon Jr, of Dixie; daughter, Roberta Bird, of Jodie; step-son, Nick Davis, of Lizemores.

Rhondes Lee "Randy" Tucker Swiss- Rhondes Lee "Randy" Tucker, 56, of Swiss, died August 21, 2011.Born on June 3, 1955, in Montgomery, WV, he was the son of the late Christopher and Florence Tucker.
He was a coal miner and a member of Brownsville Holiness Pentecostal Church.Survivors include his children, Angie Ruth Fazenbaker of Canvas, Michelle Lea Spinks of Summersville, Jennifer Renee Tucker of Summersville, Eric Tucker, Sabrina Tucker and Nathan Tucker, all of Virginia; brothers and sisters, Robert Tucker of Hot Springs, AK, Peaches Stephenson of Summersville, Patty Smallwood of Summersville and James Tucker of Beckley; grandchildren, Syera Fazenbaker, Terry Fazenbaker, Jacob Spinks, Elijah Stover and Carter Stover.

Bishop Emeritus Bernard W. Schmitt, the seventh bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, died August 16, 2011, at the age of 82 at Wheeling Hospital.He served as bishop for more than 15 years from 1989 to 2004.
He was born August 17, 1928, in Wheeling, the fourth of seven sons of the late Lawrence E. Schmitt and Eulalia R. Schiffer Schmitt. His concern for and dedication to Christ and Catholic education were developed at a young age. Following his graduation from Corpus Christi School in Wheeling and Central Catholic High School in Wheeling, the young Bernard Schmitt discerned God’s call to priesthood and began his studies for the priesthood at St. Charles College in Catonsville, Md. He later attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. Later in life, he pursued a post-graduate degree in guidance and counseling at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
He was ordained to the priesthood at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling May 28, 1955, by Bishop Thomas J. McDonnell. His first assignment as a priest was as associate pastor of the cathedral, while also serving as master of ceremonies to Archbishop John J. Swint. In 1963, he was appointed director of Vocations, director of the Propagation of the Faith and director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) for the diocese.
In 1966, Father Schmitt was appointed rector of St. Joseph Preparatory Seminary in Parkersburg, where he served until being appointed to his first pastorate at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in St. Albans. There, he was actively involved in the education and the formation of the students and families of St. Francis of Assisi Parish School. Father Schmitt was then appointed pastor of St. Michael Parish in Wheeling in 1982. He continued his active involvement in Catholic school education at the elementary and secondary levels.
On May 31, 1988, Pope John Paul II appointed Father Schmitt as Auxiliary Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston and Titular Bishop of Walla Walla. He was ordained to the episcopacy August 1, 1988, and remained pastor of St. Michael Parish in Wheeling. The following year, March 30, 1989, Pope John Paul II chose Bishop Schmitt to succeed Bishop Francis B. Schulte as bishop of Wheeling-Charleston. On May 17, 1989, Bishop Schmitt was installed as the seventh bishop of Wheeling-Charleston. During his time as bishop of Wheeling-Charleston, Bishop Schmitt was appointed to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Priestly Life and Ministry, the Committee on Marriage and Family and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development Committee.
On August 17, 2003, his 75th birthday, Bishop Schmitt submitted his resignation as bishop of Wheeling-Charleston in accord with canon law. Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation December 9, 2004. Bishop Schmitt was then elected as the diocesan administrator by the college of consultors. Bishop Michael J. Bransfield was then appointed as the eighth bishop of Wheeling-Charleston. Bishop Schmitt continued to serve the diocese in his retirement, celebrating confirmations, giving retreats and working with the Serra Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Reverend Eugene A. Schmitt, Lawrence J. Schmitt, Raymond J. Schmitt and Richard P. Schmitt. Surviving are two brothers, Henry G. Schmitt and his wife Virginia of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Robert H. Schmitt, Sr., of Wheeling, numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces and cousins.
Bishop Schmitt will lie in state at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling on Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. and the family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m., on Sunday from 12 Noon to 7 p.m. the family will be present from 12-2 and 5-7 p.m. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Joseph with Most Rev. Michael J. Bransfield, bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, as celebrant. Entombment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.

Burley Ralph Bragg, 82, of Ivydale entered into rest Monday, August 15, 2011 at Summersville Hospital.
Born May 11, 1929 in Clay County. He was the son of the late Fred and Gay Bragg. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife Laura Bragg.
Burley is survived by his daughter, Tara Bragg, step daughters, Anna Butler, Elizabeth Duffield, step sons, Gary Douglas, William Douglas, sister, Ina Horner, cousins, Claric Cottrill, Carlos Cottrill ,18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held.

Helen Markle Belcher, 89, of Parkersburg, passed away Aug. 16, 2011 at Camden-Clark Medical Center-Memorial Campus.
She was born Mar. 31, 1922 in Maysel, WV, Clay County, daughter of the late Henry M. and Sarah Rhodes Markle. She was a Quality Control Inspector for Corning Glass Works where she retired after 39 years of service.
She is survived by her son, Rondell L. (Sheila K.) Belcher of Washington, WV; daughter, Joan C. Smith of Parkersburg; four grandchildren, Laura and Brian Belcher, both of Parkersburg, Erica Belcher of Belpre, OH, and Shaun Belcher of Washington; and one great-grandchild, Daisy Cowdery of Belpre, OH.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Roy Markle; one sister, Daisy Marie Markle; and her son-in-law, Phillip L. Smith.
Services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 19 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Pastor Corey Forsyth officiating. Entombment was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Garth Eugene Thomas, 94, of Dowling Park, Fla., passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in Dowling Park.
He was a native of Procious, W.Va., moving to the Advent Christian Village in 1992 from Charleston, W.Va.
Garth was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during WWII. He was a retired banker and in his spare time enjoyed building dulcimers. He was a member of Bixler Memorial Advent Christian Church, Dowling Park.
